MINING ENGINEERING

PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEO)

The Programme Educational Objectives (PEO) of Diploma and B.Tech.in Mining Engineering are purely based on statutory provisions as under Mines Act 1952 and Rules made there under, in addition to various other Mining Acts and Rules. The course content is based on current mining industry needs for sustainable development.

PEOs (Program Educational Objectives) relate to the career and professional accomplishments of students who pass out s after their diploma stream and graduation. PEO is also guided by trend of placement of students, feedback of various employers, success level of pass out students in various statutory examinations conducted by DGMS, entry of students in higher education level courses through GATE and or Entrance scores

The course content is structured to accommodate core mining engineering, statutory provisions governing mining operations, managerial skills, communication skills, computer applications areas beside the basic science courses.

Efforts are made to enable diploma and graduate students to serve Indian Mining industry in various statutory and non-statutory positions, getting trained to be an entrepreneurs/researchers/scientist/academician. Numerous field visits, semester break training (covering most major mines of India both opencast and Underground), seminar, participating in mining exhibitions held in Indian and abroad;  and undertaking projects make them aware about changing professional needs of mining engineering field.

The Programme Educational Objectives of Mining Engineering are as follows:

The graduate shall be able to;

  1. Understand, and demonstrate the latest knowledge of mining engineering in various areas for production of coal and non-coal minerals safely.
  2. Learning scientific aspects of rock mechanics to understand the role of research through application of state-of-the-art technologies.
  3. Safety is the key to the success of any mining professional, is forming the integral part of rock blasting, strata control, environmental aspects of mining etc.

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES

The main constituents for the program are current students, alumni, faculty and the industry, having representation in different departmental meetings. Input from all the stake holders are obtained on various aspects of the program and deliberated in regular meeting of the department

Programme Outcomes are as follows:

  1. An ability to design a safe mining practices through understanding various mining subjects.
  2. Formulate a system, component, or process to meet desired needs of mining engineers within realistic constraints such  as economic, environmental and social.
  3. An ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary sciences and its application to mining.
  4. Identify and formulate the scheme to solve technical problems.
  5. Understanding of professional responsibility and skill.
  6. Broad based mining education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context in long term.
  7. Recognition of the need for conservation of reserves and development of safe technology survival in global environment.
  8. Ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for mining engineering practices.
  9. To understand engineering and management principles and its application through most rational approaches for the extraction of minerals.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Mining Engineering deals extraction of minerals safely and scientifically. While conventional method was to extract coal or non-coal minerals from depth, changes in technology have helped to extract from opencast mines.  Today over 95 percent of Indian coal is from opencast mines. History of mining dates back to Harrapppan civilization and had today uses digital technologies to mine from greater depths safely and efficiently. Safety being one of the primary objectives of teaching mining, mining engineers who hold statutory positions to mine.

Mining engineering broadly cover various safety aspects of mining. It covers all technical and statutory aspects related to mine ventilation, mine planning & economics, mining machinery selection & operation, rock mechanics, design of opencast mines, mine surveying, computer application, rock fragmentation, processing of blasted ore, sustainable mining methods, etc.
