Career Prospects:
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that employment of agricultural and food scientists will grow 7% from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations.
This growth is due to the increasing demand for food and agricultural products, as well as the need for agronomists to help farmers and other agricultural producers adapt to
climate change and other challenges.

Some of the specific career options available to agronomists include :

  • Farm manager: Farm managers oversee the day-to-day operations of farms, including crop production, livestock management, and financial planning.
  • Agronomist: Agronomists work with farmers and other agricultural producers to help them improve crop yields and soil health. They may also conduct research on new agricultural technologies and practices.
  • Research scientist: Research scientists work in government agencies, universities, and private companies to conduct research on agricultural topics. They may study crop genetics, soil science, or other aspects of agriculture.
  • Consultant: Consultants provide advice to farmers and other agricultural producers on a variety of topics, such as crop production, soil health, and pest management.
  • Teacher: Agronomists can also teach at colleges and universities, or in agricultural training programs.

In addition to these specific career options, agronomists with strong communication and leadership skills may also find opportunities in other fields, such as government, business, and non-profit organizations. Here is a snapshot of available options of employment :

  • Colleges and universities (research, teaching, and extension).
  • Agricultural consulting companies.
  • Agrochemical companies.
  • Seed and plant production companies.
  • International agricultural research centres.
  • Biological control companies.
  • Private practice.
  • Public policy organizations.
  • Agricultural Research Service.
  • UPSC-Forest Service.
  • State Departments of Agriculture (PSC).
  • Environmental, agricultural, and patent law firms.

If you are interested in a career in agronomy, there are a few things you can do to prepare. First, you should earn a bachelor's degree in agronomy or a related field. You can also gain experience by working on a farm or in an agricultural research lab. Finally, you should network with other agronomists and stay up-to-date on the latest agricultural trends. With the right preparation, you can have a rewarding and successful career in
agronomy.
